My Weight-Loss Journey: How PCOS, GLP-1s, and a Whole Lot of Persistence Changed My Life

By Maddie – RevIVe Wellness

If you’ve ever felt like you were doing everything right in your weight-loss journey and still not seeing results, I need you to know: I’ve been there. My long path toward sustainable weight loss didn’t start with perfect routines or flawless motivation. It began with frustration, confusion, and a diagnosis that finally made all my symptoms start to make sense.

Where It Really Began: My PCOS Diagnosis

My journey truly began in 2022 when I was diagnosed with PCOS, a hormonal condition that affects metabolism, weight loss, cravings, and overall wellness. Suddenly, all the struggles that felt like personal failures — stubborn weight gain, constant fatigue, uncontrollable cravings, and irregular cycles — had a real medical explanation connected to insulin resistance.

I tried taking control in the ways I knew best:

• Cooking more meals at home
• HIIT workout classes
• Walking my dog three miles several times a week
• Trying to manage my stress, routines, and hydration

But at the same time, I was working 12-hour night shifts in the emergency department, barely sleeping, not getting enough protein, and definitely not hydrating properly. My body was exhausted, inflamed, hormonally imbalanced, and struggling to support weight loss in any meaningful way.

And let’s be honest — when you’re working nights, the 3 a.m. vending machine “meal options” do not exactly support a healthy metabolism.

Metformin Was My First Breakthrough

In October 2022, I started metformin to address insulin resistance caused by PCOS — and for a while, it worked. I lost 35 pounds within a few months, giving me hope that my weight-loss goals were finally possible.

But by April 2023, everything stalled.
My effort was still there, but my metabolism felt stuck. Anyone who has experienced a weight-loss plateau knows how mentally exhausting and discouraging it can be. It’s that moment where you wonder, What else can I possibly do? Especially when you see someone drop weight just by switching from regular soda to diet.

The Turning Point: Starting GLP-1s

Everything shifted again in April 2024 when I consistently started GLP-1 medication. For me, this was the true turning point in my weight-loss journey — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Before GLP-1s, the food noise was overwhelming.
I felt completely out of control with cravings, portion sizes, and constant thoughts about food. It wasn’t just hunger — it was that nonstop urge to finish everything on my plate, even when my body was full. I craved fried, fatty, heavy foods that left me feeling sluggish and defeated.

Food also became my reward system.
Bad ER shift?
Had to do CPR?
Three combative patients before sunrise?

My only “treat” was food — and I treated myself like I’d won a gold medal.

I hated feeling like I couldn’t trust myself around food.

Then GLP-1 medication changed everything.

After starting, things finally quieted down:

• The constant food chatter eased
• I gained control over my portions
• Heavy, greasy cravings faded
• I felt satisfied sooner
• I stopped feeling guilty for not finishing my plate
• I was able to listen to my hunger cues instead of fighting them

For the first time in years, I wasn’t battling my biology. My weight-loss habits finally aligned with what my body needed.

Meal prepping became realistic.
Prioritizing protein became natural.
Food stopped being a mental tug-of-war.

And suddenly, I was the person taking a few bites and saying “I’m full,” while everyone looked at me like I’d announced I was relocating to Mars.

Today: A Half Marathon & 80 Pounds Down

As of September 2025, I ran a half marathon — something I never imagined I’d accomplish on this weight-loss journey.

And I am officially down 80 pounds from where I started.

The journey has included plateaus, victories, emotional days, and moments of pure disbelief. But the biggest transformation hasn’t just been physical. It’s been the peace I’ve found with food, my body, my hormones, and the way I fuel myself.

GLP-1s didn’t just support weight loss — they helped reset my relationship with food and allowed me to build a lifestyle that supports long-term wellness.

Why I Share My Story

As someone who has lived both sides of the weight-loss struggle, I want you to know:

There is nothing wrong with needing help.
There is nothing wrong with your biology.
And you deserve support that respects your hormones, mental health, and body.

GLP-1 medication wasn’t a shortcut for me.
It was a tool — a life-changing one.

If you’re reading this thinking, I have questions but don’t even know where to start, I need you to know you can always reach out to me.

Ask the fun questions.
The awkward ones.
The “is this normal?” ones.
The TMI ones.
The emotional ones.

I’m open about my journey because I know how isolating weight loss with PCOS, insulin resistance, or GLP-1 therapy can feel when you don’t have someone who understands it personally.

I’ve been there —
with the upset stomach after eating something I shouldn’t,
with one too many margaritas,
with the strategic vacation planning while staying consistent on a GLP-1.

If you want someone who understands both the science and the chaos?
I’m your girl.

If you want to talk symptoms, dosing, plateaus, cravings, protein hacks, meal prepping, or what GLP-1s feel like day to day — I’m here.

We can laugh together, cry together, or aggressively scroll DoorDash looking for a protein-heavy, late-night option.

Whatever you need — I’m here.

You deserve compassionate, judgment-free support on your weight-loss journey.
You don’t have to navigate this alone.

Whenever you’re ready to feel strong, balanced, confident, and in control again —
I’m here to walk that path with you.
